A doctoral degree is a terminal degree in a given academic field. Most commonly awarded doctoral degrees are PhDs: Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These can apply for psychology, history, business, and other subject areas. A few disciplines have specific terminal degrees such as Doctor of Education or Doctor of Engineering.

You will have to have earned at least a bachelor's degree from an online university of campus college before being able to get into a doctoral program. The amount of time it takes to earn a doctoral degree varies depending on the discipline. In an accredited program, research doctorates can take up to 10 years because of prerequisite courses and time requirements for a research project, writing a thesis, and then defending a thesis.

The National Center for Education Statistics' Digest of Education Statistics found that over 63,700 doctor's degrees were awarded in 2008 in the U.S. This marked a 38% increase from ten years ago.
